Concussions Treatments in Philadelphia, PA

Concussions happen when the head hits or is hit by something, or when sudden acceleration or deceleration of the head occurs.  When someone has a concussion , brain cells can be injured causing chemical changes that disturb the way the brain normally works.   Some people with concussions recover quickly, but some have symptoms (such as headache, nausea, vomiting,  dizziness, balance problems, fatigue, irritability) that last for days or weeks.

How is a Concussion Diagnosed?

A concussion is diagnosed when an individual experiences – for at least one minute – headache, nausea, vomiting,  dizziness, balance problems, fatigue or irritability.  Imaging  studies can help rule out other possible causes and are normally only necessary  if the diagnosis is in doubt.

Conventional treatment of a concussion  involves rest, painkillers and watchful waiting.

A more integrative approach includes the use of other modalities to assist the body as it heals from the concussion.   Not only can one suffer from ligament and muscle strain from physical trauma, but there often can be a balance disturbance as a result of injury to the body’s vestibular symptoms as well.   The use of acupuncture as well as osteopathic manipulation is useful to address headaches, muscle strain, as well as balance disturbances involved in concussion.

Proper nutrition is also key to proper healing.  This involves a combination of a healthy diet prescribed by a functional medicine practitioner, as well as supplementation.  Intravenous nutrition with Vitamin C, Magnesium, Calcium, Zinc, B vitamins, and Glutathione can also greatly enhance a recovery program.
