Addressing The Roots of Chronic Disease
In Functional Medicine, we use the term “root cause” frequently. It takes a significant amount of story gathering and lab testing to find the root cause or causes that have brought on a disease process.
We make sure no stone is left unturned when you meet with us. When you visit our Functional Medicine clinic, we will ask questions about your medical history, childhood, lifestyle, and nutrition and then decide which testing is most appropriate for your case, whether that be chronic infection, chronic toxicity, gut health, micronutrients, genomics, inflammation, or hormones.

Our Functional Medicine Process
We ensure a sustainable lifestyle around the things that matter the most: sleep, nutrition, elimination, sunshine, play, and relationships. In addition, we prescribe an in-office treatment plan to maximize healing time.
STEP 1
Story Gathering
When you become a patient at Meeting Point Health, you get a team to walk this journey with you. In addition to your doctors, you also have a nurse, health coach, and patient care coordinator to ensure your treatment is successful. Patients meet with our doctors for a one-hour session to review history and decide on the next steps to take.
STEP 2
Lab Testing
Our lab partners include Great Plains, Vibrant, ZRT, Precision Analytics, Doctors Data, Genova, Cyrex, and Real-Time Labs, among others. We use Rupa Health which allows us to order labs from virtually any functional medicine laboratory. Depending on your case, we will choose from a variety of deeper testing from these specialty labs.
When your results are in, we will review your reports in an in-depth 1-hour Lab Review session to evaluate your lab findings and prescribe a treatment plan for in-office treatment as well as your home protocol. Click here for more information on testing.
STEP 3
Start Your In-Office Treatment Plan
The big players in your treatment that will rapidly accelerate your healing are IV therapy (ozone and nutrient infusions) and health coaching. Depending on your condition, we may recommend other therapies such as acupuncture, osteopathic manipulation, infrared sauna, and cupping therapy.
STEP 4
Maintain your protocol at home in between sessions.
This step in our functional medicine process will include maintaining your medicinal nutrition plan, taking herbs and supplements, along with doing nebulizer therapies with our prescribed compounded medications, bio-identical hormones, or peptide therapy (depending on your prescribed protocol.) And don’t forget sleep, play, hydration, prayer, and proper elimination!
The Pillars of Functional Health
- Movement. Good health requires daily movement, or exercise. This can be as simple as a daily walk, jog, or calisthenics routine. Movement promotes your body’s natural ability to heal itself.
- Nutrition. In order to fuel the body’s movement, you need proper nutrition. Good nutritional habits are paramount to good health, and cannot be ignored when applying the principals of functional medicine.
- Stress Management. The body’s stress response releases a chemical in the body called cortisol. It wreaks havoc on the body’s ability to burn fat efficiently. Stress has also shown to have detrimental effects on the heart and brain. Management of stress, therefore, is an important part of maintaining good health.
- Community. Part of being a functional health practitioner involves getting involved–community is necessary to the process. We treat each other like family because it’s a way of practicing self-care, too. To give is to receive.
- Rest. When the body encounters physical stress, muscle tissues stretch and tear. Rest and relaxation promotes the body’s natural healing process, repairing muscles and pushing healthy, new tissue to the surface.
- Sunshine. The sun is the center of our universe, but it is also vital to our nutrition and health. Exposure to sunlight promotes increased mood, improved sleep, increased energy, bone growth, reduced stress, and much more.
- Love. Love is paramount for living a balanced, functional health life. Healthy relationships with friends, family, and lovers provide spiritual enrichment, physical stimulation, and emotional stability.

Functional Medicine Tools for Rapid Healing at Meeting Point Health
We use the most cutting-edge effective therapies to fast track your healing and address the root cause of your condition. Below is a list of our most common therapies.
Maximize the foundations of health to ensure healing and resilience.
Give your body 100% bioavailable nutrients specific to your condition. For example, phosphatidylcholine (PC) makes up 70-80% of your cellular membranes. IV PC can help in degenerative or neurological conditions that require cellular regeneration.
Re-pattern your nervous system response while treating musculoskeletal pain and regulating hormones and neurotransmitters with a one-hour acupuncture treatment.
A one-hour session with the doctor who will diagnose and treat areas in the body where problems in restriction are inhibiting proper functioning.
This well-known therapy treats musculoskeletal pain but is highly effective at promoting detoxification and blood circulation.
Compounded nutritionals such as glutathione can be nebulized daily at home to replenish antioxidant levels for proper detoxification.
You will be prescribed physician-grade nutraceuticals and given a specific daily regimen according to your lab results.
Detox in our cedar infrared sauna. Did you know that the highest levels of plastics, heavy metals, and mycotoxins are emitted through sweat and not stool or urine? Infrared Sauna is an extremely effective detoxification therapy and a great non-needle approach.
If applicable, your doctor may prescribe specific peptides for your condition to be self-administered at home.

Retesting is not required. However, to observe whether or not your goals are being met, we recommend you retest every six months to gauge the effectiveness of treatments and to mark progress.
Functional Medicine Testing
Functional Medicine is the practice of getting to the root cause of a dysfunction. To do so, testing is necessary. At Meeting Point Health, we offer comprehensive functional medicine testing in Philadelphia, PA. Our tests help you find the right treatment for chronic modern illnesses such as gut issues, migraines, autoimmune disorders, chronic fatigue, and more.
Meeting Point Health approaches care with compassion, intellect, and curiosity. We have experience providing integrative, regenerative, and functional medicine. Our team has helped countless clients find relief from chronic illnesses with individualized testing.

How Our Testing Works
Our bodies are made up of interdependent systems that need to function in harmony with one another. That’s why when something isn’t right, it can be hard to discover the root cause of an illness or injury. We comprehensively test different systems of the body to try to uncover the complex picture of your health and discover what may be causing your illness.
Why Should I Invest in Testing?
If you’ve had chronic issues, such as chronic pain, chronic fatigue, gut issues, anxiety, and irregular menstrual cycles, you’ve likely been prescribed things like steroids, SSRIs, oral contraceptives, and acid blockers without any lab work ever being done to figure out WHY you are sick.
When we do deeper testing in Functional Medicine, we do so with the intention of finding the root cause. Often, this can be a perfect storm of long-term stress depleting your resources, malnutrition, decreased hormone production, genetics and environmentally-acquired illness from pathogens and toxins.
Types of Test We Use
Our lab partners include Great Plains, Vibrant, ZRT, Precision Analytics, Doctors Data, Genova, Cyrex, and Real Time Labs, among others. We also use Rupa Health which allows us to order labs from virtually any functional medicine laboratory. Testing can include specimens of:
- Blood
- Urine
- Stool
- Saliva
Depending on your case, we will choose from a variety of deeper testing from these specialty labs, including, but not limited to:
- Digestive Health - Comprehensive GI Mapping Stool Test, SIBO Breath Testing, Food Sensitivities (Peptide), NutriGenomics, Celiac Genetics, Mucosal Health for Intestinal Permeability
- Hormones - 24 Hour Sex Hormones, Neurotransmitters, Comprehensive Thyroid, Estrogen Genomics, Adrenal Testing, Cycle Mapping, Sleep Hormones
- Biotoxin Illnesses - Lyme, Tick Borne Co-infections, Mold Allergy, Mycotoxins, CIRS Panel, Plastics, Glyphosate, Environmental Toxins, Heavy Metals, MARCoNS, Fungal Antibodies
- Cellular Health - Organic Acids, Amino Acids, Micronutrients and Antioxidants, Fatty Acids, Genomics, Cardiometabolic Health, Iron Panel
- Immune System Health - Cytokines, Pathogen Associated Autoimmune Reactivity, Lymphocyte Mapping, Biomarkers of Inflammation, Neurological Autoimmunity
Some basic labs can be run through Labcorp or Quest and covered by your insurance. We strongly recommend not doing this too often since your insurance provider will be strictly monitoring what they consider “extensive” testing.
FAQs About Our Functional Medicine Tests
If the lab requires a blood draw, that is something our nurses can perform in the office. However, many kits can be sent home with you or mailed to you and completed in the comfort of your home.
Our patient care coordinator will walk you through how to prepare and perform the collection. Each kit comes with a pre shipping label and envelope to be mailed back to the lab.
When your results are in, our patient care coordinator will have your results available on your online portal and schedule you for an in-depth 1-hour lab review session to evaluate your findings and prescribe a treatment plan for in-office treatment as well as your home protocol.
In addition to lab work, Dr. Stephen Matta, DO will perform an in-depth orthopedic and osteopathic physical exam to diagnose structural problems such as issues with nerve compression, functional movement, torn or strained ligaments and muscles, and inflammation.
