What is sculptra?

Sculptra is a poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA) that is used to correct shallow to deep facial wrinkles and folds and enhance the fullness of the cheeks. It is a regenerative injectable filler that helps to replace lost collagen by stimulating its production. It is appropriate for use on all skin types and colors.

What is sculptra used to treat?

Sculptra primarily fights the effects of aging by replacing lost collagen in your face. The injectable filler works to repair the underlying structure of a person’s face and create a more youthful appearance overall. It has a wide range of facelifting applications, from making cheekbones look softer to eliminating wrinkles.

How to prepare for your appointment

Before your treatment, you need to stop all medication that may cause bruising or bleeding for at least one week before your appointment. Such medications include Aspirin, Advil, Ibuprofen, Aleve, Motrin, Naproxen, and Naprosyn. If you have been prescribed blood thinners, please let our staff know. On the day of your appointment, wash your face and arrive makeup-free.

Sculptra is most commonly injected into the deep dermal layer of the skin, where it helps to replace lost collagen. It is used to correct facial wrinkles and nasolabial folds and enhance the fullness of the cheeks.

It can be used to improve the appearance of wrinkles and sagging skin by stimulating the skin’s collagen production. It will help restore the plumpness and smoothness of younger, healthy skin by triggering your body’s natural collagen production.

The most common areas of the face that are injected are the temples, cheek region, and the lower face. Sculptra can also be injected into the buttocks to replenish collagen and provide a sense of lift.

If you’ve begun to notice that your face is losing volume and you prefer a convenient treatment, Sculptra could be right for you.
Some side effects include swelling, redness, bruising, pain, and itching at the injection site. These side effects usually resolve within a few days. We try to minimize these by encouraging our clients to use arnica for a few days before treatment. In addition, we recommend pausing any vitamin or herbal supplements that are blood thinning. On the day of treatment, your clinician will use topical numbing cream and Pronox to make your procedure comfortable.
Sculptra is made of Poly(L-lactide) (PLLA), a biocompatible, biodegradable material. PLLA mimics human collagen. It is regenerative in that it also stimulates your body to create its own new collagen. As we age, we lose 10% of our collagen production with each decade. That means that at 40 years old, you have a 40% decrease in collagen production as compared to when you were born. At 50 years old, you’ll lose 50%, and so on. Sculptra is the only FDA-approved filler that produces results that last over 2 years; the longevity of results is in large part due to regenerative effects.
Sculptra is considered to be safe. Following your procedure, you can expect some temporary redness, swelling, and bruising of the treated area. Rare side effects include small bumps appearing beneath the skin.

Our practitioners and staff fully understand and empathize with the challenges that patients face as they make financial decisions for proper health care. Our practice is very different from a conventional medical practice in many ways, but the time spent with each patient is usually 30-90 minutes. Visits with a physician covered by insurance generally allow for less than 10 minutes in total! Conventional medical practices that take insurance maintain brief office visits and high patient loads for this reason. We cannot provide the expert care that every one of our patients deserves under those circumstances.

Insurance also dictates the types of treatments and order of treatments patients can receive for a particular condition.

Opting out of insurance allows the patient and the doctor to maintain their medical autonomy, which is imperative to ensure you get the right treatment at the right time and the right dose.
