Osteopathic Manipulation Therapy
Osteopathic manipulation is a hands-on treatment that restores alignment, mobility, and balance throughout the body. Using precise, gentle techniques, our physicians identify and correct structural restrictions that contribute to pain, tension, or dysfunction. By improving circulation and supporting the body’s natural self-healing mechanisms, this therapy helps relieve musculoskeletal pain, enhance mobility, and promote overall well-being. At Meeting Point Health, osteopathic manipulation is often integrated with regenerative and functional medicine treatments for comprehensive, whole-body healing.
How does osteopathic manipulation work?
Osteopathic manipulation therapy stimulates the musculoskeletal system through repetitive manipulation of your limbs and soft tissues. The DO, or doctor of osteopathic medicine, uses more than 40 techniques to work your musculoskeletal system back into proper alignment. The manipulation might feel awkward or strange but they should not cause pain or discomfort.
The techniques used in OMT help address any structural issues and muscular imbalances. They also help with joint mobility, muscle flexibility, as well as improve circulation. Through direct manipulation of your muscles and limbs, a DO will help improve blood flow and nerve health in the targeted areas.
Is Osteopathic Manipulation the Same as Physical Therapy?
Both OMT and PT are medically supported therapies. Both of these therapies believe that the function of a body’s different systems depends on the underlying structures of that system. Both use movement and physical manipulation as part of their treatments.
However, the biggest difference that sets OMT apart from PT is who is licensed to perform it. OMT can only be performed by DOs, who are fully trained, licensed and practicing physicians. Physical therapists are not medical doctors. Though a physical therapist can obtain a doctorate in PT, they cannot write prescriptions and perform the other duties of a fully licensed medical doctor.
